The goal of sword and staff training is to rediscover what it means to move freely and live joyfully. And we can consider this process as having three gates: Seeing Clearly, Moving Freely, and Living Joyfully. So, what are we to think of this process? Let’s take a look.
What does it mean to see clearly?
To see clearly is to perceive reality as it is, free from the filters of judgment, attachment, or illusion. It is the clarity of a still pond that reflects the sky without distortion.
Seeing clearly means letting go of preconceived notions and understanding that all things are transient and interconnected. When the mind is cluttered with desires, fears, or expectations, our vision becomes clouded.
True clarity arises from inner stillness cultivated through mindfulness and presence. It is not about analyzing or grasping but about experiencing life directly, moment by moment. To see clearly is to recognize that we are neither separate from nor bound by the world. In this clarity, we find peace, for we no longer resist or cling but simply witness. It is in this pure seeing that wisdom and compassion naturally arise.
What does it mean to move freely?
Moving freely brings to mind the notion of spontaneity. And we’ve all experienced it. A ball is tossed our way, and without thinking, we reach out to catch it. We spot a tree branch up ahead, and without a thought, we duck under it. But, for our purposes, moving freely is more than just this kind of accidental spontaneity. That is, in many cases, we can recognize in advance that we are – or will be, in fact, facing uncertainty. Entering a strange room, being questioned on an unknown topic, responding to an unknown sound, etc. And we understand that moving freely in these situations is a remarkably different animal.
So, what makes it different? Choice.
In the case of accidental spontaneity, it is often the case that there is no time to think, and so there is only the reaction. But in the face of uncertainty, we often have the option to intend our response or respond spontaneously. And so, we might say that moving freely in the face of uncertainty means that we choose to respond spontaneously.
And how is it that we choose to respond spontaneously? By choosing to see clearly.
What does it mean to live joyfully?
Living joyfully is about appreciating life’s blessings, big and small. As we age, we realize joy doesn’t come from perfection or grand achievements but from the simple, everyday moments—sharing a laugh, enjoying a good meal, or feeling the warmth of the sun on our faces. It’s about gratitude for what you have and acceptance of what you cannot change. Relationships play a big part—connecting with family, friends, or even a stranger with kindness can fill your heart with happiness. Staying curious, learning new things, and finding purpose, whether through a hobby or helping others, bring deep fulfillment.
Living joyfully also means letting go of regrets and focusing on the present moment, because it’s all we truly have. Life isn’t always easy, but by choosing to find beauty and meaning in each day, we create joy that sustains us.
