Hikiotoshi-uchi translates as ‘staff pulled back and down.’ This is the third of the twelve basic Seitei Jodo skills that are learned and practiced. The goal here is to demonstrate less of a hitting action and more of a ripping action.
- 1. What is being demonstrated? Ripping the sword with a nearly vertical strike, contacting near the tip of the sword.
- 2. What is the intended target? The sword.
- 3. What is the starting stance? Hikiotoshi-uchi-no-kamae.
- 4. What is the very first move? The upper hand extends straight forward.
- 5. What is the required footwork? Step after striking.
- 6. What is the required handwork? Lower hand slides to the end of the staff and back.
